History

bancor was created in 1974 through separation of the study and research office from the company Enrico Piazza, which was founded in 1924 with the objective of construction, sale and assistance for printing machines and the relative accessories.

At the end of the 1960s and the start of the 1970s, the company felt the need to diversify its activities and created a research and design group for both development of its own products and for those of third parties. It therefore started collaborating with several of the most important and qualified companies in the sector of Office Automation, leading international companies such as Olivetti or Underwood.

Important projects were undertaken during this period, which would subsequently be introduced into the production ranges of these companies. Among this range of activities, the group identified the banking and Office Automation sectors as the driving markets, with heavy technological development and excellent possibilities for growth. It therefore decided to operate directly and bancor was created, with the precise objective of designing, constructing and marketing specialised machinery and equipment for bank automation and Office Automation.

Why bancor as its name?

A simple, easy to remember name with a certain impact was needed, which would give some idea of the company mission. In order to guarantee all these distinguishing qualities, bancor was chosen because:

  • it represents the universal currency which the British economist John Maynard Keynes wanted to introduce, during the Bretton Woods conference in 1944, in order to avoid monetary tension leading to new wars. The plan involved the introduction of a world currency unit and the creation of a bank of the central banks, which would have been responsible for granting credit to the debtor countries using the bancor as the currency;
  • bancor was the pseudonym used by the governor of the Bank of Italy, Guido Carli, for the articles he wrote for the columns of a specialist weekly magazine, in which he analysed the international political, economic and financial scene, with the objectivity and clarity which were his distinguishing features.
